The Chicago Tribune today reports on the leading editorial in The Times (of London), which "deals with the marriage of the Prince of Wales, suggesting the time has come for him to choose a wife."  The Times' editorial notes that the choice should "be his own and fall on an English girl."

It has also been suggested that the Prince of Wales's parents, King George V and Queen Mary, also feel "it is time for the prince, who is 26, to marry and secure the succession to the throne."

The Prince's name "has been coupled with that of two English girls."

One of the favorites is said to be Lady Joan Mulholland, who is a lady-in-waiting to the Prince's sister, Princess Mary.  She is the daughter of the late 5th Earl of Strafford and a "war widow."  Her husband, the Hon Andrew Mulholland, eldest son and heir of Henry Mulholland, 2nd Baron Dunleath, was killed at Ypres on November 1, 1914.

Lady Joan, 31, is said to be the "prettiest woman in court," and marriage with the Prince of Wales would prove to be very popular.

Another popular choice is 20-year-old Lady Dorothy Cavendish, eldest of the unmarried daughters of the Duke of Devonshire, viceroy of Canada.   The Prince of Wales "is said to have paid her attention during his Canadian trip."

[The original report omitted an important fact:  On April 21, 1920, Lady Dorothy had married Harold Macmillan.  The next unmarried sister was Lady Rachel, then age 18.)

The British people would be very happy if their future King married an English girl, as they are "tired of foreign queens."  There is nothing in British law or even in the house law of the house of Windsor that "royalty must marry royalty."

[Lady Joan married for a second time, as the second wife of  Frederick Lambart, 10th Earl of Cavan.  The Prince of Wales attended their wedding on November 27, 1922.  The couple had two daughters, Lady Elizabeth and Lady Joanna. Lady Elizabeth was one of Princess Elizabeth's bridesmaids.  Her granddaughter, Rose Hanbury, married to David, the 7th Marquess of Cholmondeley, the Lord Great Chamberlain.
