Belgian and Italian sovereigns planning marriage for their children

April 2, 1926

No official announcement has been made, but  the state visit by King Albert and Queen Elisabeth of Belgian and their daughter, Princess Marie-José, to Italy, is "for the purpose of arranging" a marriage between Princess Marie-José and Crown Prince Umberto, heir to the Italian throne.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the engagement will be announced in the fall, following the Crown Prince's 21st birthday.

While this marriage did eventually happen, Marie-Jose was rumored to be engaged to the future Olav V of Norway in the fall of 1926, after the marriage of Astrid of Sweden and Leopold of Belgium.

Likewise, before his engagement to Astrid, Giovanna and Mafalda of Savoy were rumored to be possible brides for Leopold.
