Engagements - reports & denials

January 11, 1889

From Sofia, a report that Prince Ferdinand is to marry the eldest daughter of the Count of Flanders is "declared to be untrue," according to the New York Times.

The North German Gazette announces the engagement of Princess Luise Sophie of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenberg to Prince Friedrich Leopold.

The 22-year-old Princess is the daughter of Duke Friedrich VIII of Schleswig-Holstein and Princess Adelheid of Hohenlohe-Langenburg.  Prince Friedrich Leopold, 23, is the son of Prince Friedrich Karl of Prussia and Princess Maria Anna of Anhalt-Dessau.

Princess Luise Sophie is a younger sister of the Empress Auguste Viktoria, wife of Kaiser Wilhelm II.

The Darmstader Zeitung, the "court organ of Hesse" is denying a report that Princess Alix of Hesse and by Rhine is to become betrothed to the Tsarevitch.

There are also rumors that Prince Albrecht will "soon resign the Regency" of the Duchy of Brunswick, and that the Duke of Cumberland will be restored to his throne in duchy.
